Monster Rocks

**Parents please ensure that ALL of your child's belongings are labelled. We just received our portable coat hooks and will start using them on Monday. Please have a conversation with your child about putting their mitten, scarves and hats Inside their backpack when they get to school. Because our coat hooks are on wheels and will be moved around, labeled clothing will ensure your child goes home with all their belongings.  Thank you for your help.

Dear Mom and Dad:

Ask me to tell you the "5 little pumpkins" poem I learned.

Here’s our day in photos!

Question of the day: Give your monster rock a name and post it on the blog!

Kindergarten

Housekeeping:

No School Friday October 30 for PD Day.

Photo retakes are on Thursday November 5. Students who were away for the first round will have their picture taken, if you would like your child to take retakes, please e-mail or send a note to school letting your child's teacher know they need retakes. Thank you
Cranston Peace Ambassadors will be starting a drive for Jacket Racket beginning Monday, October 26th and running to Friday, November 6th. This is a wonderful opportunity for all students to help other children here in our city, by donating warm outerwear that they no longer need. It is a valuable experience for our students and reinforces Cranston School’s commitment to peace and citizenship education. Please take some time with your children to go through their winter items. It is that time of year when we all realize that hats, mittens, boots, snow pants and coats have been outgrown! Please give them a wash and put them in a plastic bag to be brought to school. If you could list the items and sizes on the outside of the bag, it would help the students with the sorting process! We also accept adult sizes, as many older students need help to stay warm in the winter as well!

Pp

Dear Mom and Dad:

We learned that the P sound is a silent sound. Ask me to show you the action I use to remember the sound. We learned a story about P. She is a mother who is quiet so her baby can sleep. That is why p is a silent sound. When I make the p sound and touch my throat, I shouldn’t feel it vibrate. Try it with me!

We practiced drawing a guided drawing of a pig in our visual journals today.

We learned a P song. Please click on the link and sing it with me! Thank you.

Question of the day: What words can you think of that start with P? Practice writing P in the air. Remember to always start at the top when you are forming your letters.

Kindergarten

Look at our painted rocks! Stay tuned to see what we turn them into tomorrow!

My mouth is a volcano!

Dear Mom and Dad:

Thank you for the students who brought in rocks and who brought in more than one rock for others to use. We started painting our monster rocks today. We need about 30 more rocks. If your child has not had a chance to bring in a rock, please send one. That would be greatly appreciated.

Today kindergarten’s occupational therapist was in our class today. She will be supporting us where needed throughout the year. Today she worked with us and talked about little problem versus big problem.

Mrs. Southworth was also in our class and she read a book called “My mouth is a volcano”. Sometimes while someone else is speaking, we have other thoughts in our head and we don’t think before our thoughts burst out and we interrupt others. In kindergarten, I am learning to use a quiet hand when I have something to share.

Question of the day: Post on the blog what the message of the story “My mouth is a volcano” was. (hint: interrupting)

A letter was sent home about kindergarten collecting items! Please note that we are not asking you to buy any items but rather having your child collect items they might find either in your junk drawer, outside (cones, twigs) etc. We need CLEAR CONTAINERS of various sizes: jars, plastic containers, ice cream buckets. If you have some that you could donate to the class please send them with your child. Thank you very much!
Dear Parents,

We have a new volunteer coordinator named Sarah Axt.  If you would like to volunteer from now on, please email her at SarahAxt46@gmail.com by the end of each month. Please include your child’s name, their color group, and if they are in the AM and PM and she will make a schedule for the kindergarten classes. Even if you can't volunteer right now, please let her know that you would like to be part of her email group for future dates, projects or field trips. Please ensure that you have a security clearance and have completed all the necessary paperwork at the office before you volunteer.

Thank you from your kindergarten team!

The Dot

Dear Mom and Dad:

Please read the previous blog entry about bringing in rocks for our monster art activity. Thank you!

Today we did some art using felt markers to draw dots. I will be bringing this art home this week and if you would like, you can order my art onto different items such as a canvas bag, coffee mug, pillowcase etc. Watch for a notice in my folder this week.

We have a guest teacher for the next three days. Her name is Mrs. Redwood.

PM students had their very first fire drill today. We did great! Ask me to tell you what my job is when I hear the fire alarm.

Question of the day: We have learned a new big word called “subitizing”. Subitizing means that I can recognize a number of items at a glance without have to count each one individually. I can practice this with you at home. All you have to do is quickly flash me a certain amount of fingers (hold it for 2 seconds) and then close your hands. Then I have to quickly tell you how many fingers you were holding up. At school I practice this with a big blue dice. Post on the blog that you practiced this at home! This will be a good skill I need to learn.
