The Gingerbread Man

Dear Mom and Dad:

We read a story called “The Gingerbread Man” Ask me to tell you what this story was about. We talked a little about sequencing and what happens first, next and last in a story.

We made our own paper gingerbread men. My teachers were impressed with how I followed directions because there was a lot of steps. Ask me to tell you what some of the steps were and how I decorated my gingerbread man.

We have been working hard at practicing our songs for our upcoming concert! I will have a dress rehearsal during the day on Tuesday December 8.

AM kindergarten will perform at 6:00pm (please arrive at 5:45pm)
PM kindergarten will perform at 6:45pm (please arrive at 6:30pm)

Students will go to the kindergarten room while parents find a seat in the gym!

Love,
Kindergarten

Gingerbread Decorating

Over the next couple week until Winter Break we will be reading variations of the Gingerbread Man story.  On Dec. 18 we will be having pajama day and working on using what we know about combinations of 5 and decorating gingerbread people.  We would appreciate one parent volunteer from each class to assist with our decorating.  Please e-mail Sarah, our room volunteer (sarahaxt46@gmail.com) if you are able to help out!

We will also need donations for the following items for EACH AM and PM team:

22 gingerbread people for AM and 20 gingerbread people for PM
1 large bag of peanut-free Smarties or M&Ms
1 large bag of chocolate chips
1 large bag of mini jujubes
   3 containers of white icing
1 box of assorted food coloring (that will be enough for the entire triad AM and PM)

Bulk barn is a great place to get these materials!
There is no expectation whatsoever for gingerbread and icing to be homemade - we welcome whatever you are able to send.  Please contact sarahaxt46@gmail.com if you are able to donate.  Thank you!

Library books are due every Monday. Your child will bring a new book home every week on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.  Please return them on Monday.

As I begin to wear my snow pants, gloves toques, scarves etc. please help me be independent by letting me put on all these things by myself. Thank you for your support.

Parents please make sure all of your child’s belongings are LABELED. There are many items that are duplicates in our classroom and it is very helpful when things are labeled so that they can be returned to the rightful owner. Thank you for your help with this.

Please look to the left column of this blog page to see our blog archive. Click on NOVEMBER 10 to access your child's "families helping families" blog. Your child brought home a letter about FAMILIES HELPING FAMILIES. This is a special school project that we have done each year. Please find your child’s teacher’s BLOG POST and you can comment on what you will be able to bring. This will allow other parents to see what is still needed. Thank you so much for your support. Please note (Mrs Ly’s AM and PM class are supporting ONE big family so there is only one blog post for both AM and PM classes.

Knowledge Building Circle

Dear Mom and Dad of PM kindergarten:

We used our beautiful stuff collection to finish up our math dot art! Ask me to tell you what items I put on it.

We worked with Mrs. Southworth and Mrs. Jones today. Ask me to tell you the story Mrs. Southworth told us about that involved polar bears!

We learned about what a Knowledge Building Circle (KBC) was. Ask me to tell you what we talked about in a big classroom circle. This is a time for our class to come together and share our thoughts and wonders. During KBC I am not talking unless I have the ball. When I have something to share I put my hand in the circle (not put my hand up) to contribute to the circle.

Question of the day: What was your favorite activity at school today?

Zones of regulation

Dear Mom and Dad:

AM Kindergarten:
During math we did an activity called “shake and spill”. I had 5 counter chips, one side is red and one side is yellow. I had to put them in a small cup and shake them and then spill them on the table. Then I used my five frame to show 5 using the colors that spilled out. For example I might have 3 red and 2 yellow which make 5! Ask me to tell you different ways to make 5. You can also ask me how much more I might need to make 5. For example: put out 3 fingers and ask me to show you and tell you how many more fingers I need to get to 5.

PM Kindergarten:
We continued to talk about the zones of regulation. Today we talked about the yellow zone. Did you know that it is okay for me to be in the yellow zone but I am learning strategies to move myself from the yellow zone to the green zone. The yellow zone is when I am feeling frustrated. Ask me to tell you what strategies I could use to get out of the yellow zone.

We have been talking a lot about the zones of regulation. This will become common vocabulary for the entire school.  You can use this language with me at home as well. For example: if you notice I am in the blue zone (sad, tired) please help me acknowledge that and help me with strategies on how I can move myself to the green zone (happy).

We have had a lot of new centres to help with our counting skills, fine motor and printing skills. Ask me to tell you what center I was at today

Question of the day: post on the blog what center you enjoyed today.

Kindergarten

7 Sacred Teachings

Dear Mom and Dad:

We had a very special presentation today from the Rabbit and Bears paw group. Ask me to tell you what kinds of puppet animals there were.  I learned about seven different sacred of teaching:
1)   humility
2)   honesty
3)   respect
4)   courage
5)   wisdom
6)   truth
7)    love

These teachings are a message of traditional values and hope for the future. It is a universal teaching to most First Nations peoples.

Question of the day: Pick one of the teachings and have a discussion with your parents about it. Post on the blog what this word means to you.

Take a look at some of our photos from center time!
