Tanga art

Dear Mom and Dad of AM kindergarten:

We are so excited! Today is day 90 of kindergarten which also means that I am half way through kindergarten. Today we re-read the book about “how to fill a bucket”. It is always good to revisit and re-read books. Please have a conversation with me about what it means to be a bucket filler and a bucket dipper. Some of us need a little reminder sometimes.

Mrs. Ellison worked with us today on our Tanga art project. Cranston raises money each year for a school in Tanzania. We will be selling our art on the evening of Thursday February 25 for $10 each.

Question of the day: Post on the blog how you can fill a bucket at school with your teacher and with a friend

Literacy Groups

Dear Mom and Dad:

**Parents, we have a pair of missing girl boots in the PM kindergarten. The student has her name written on the inside. If you could please check your child’s boot to see if they might have taken the wrong pair. Thank you for your help!

Kindergarten started literacy groups today! I will be working with a teacher 2-3 times a week to work on literacy. Ask me to tell you what I did in my group today! This will really give me a boost with my literacy skills. Some of us are learning our letters, some are looking at sight words and some of us are blending words and reading stories.

We are doing centers in gym. Ask me to tell you what centers I tried out today.

AM kindergarten: we did a sketch of our trout eggs! Ask me to describe what a trout egg looks like.

Good fit goals

Dear Mom and Dad:

Do you know what a good fit goal is? Today we worked with Mrs. Bowles to think about how to make a good fit goal. Ask me to tell you about the different shoes that we looked at. We learned that picking a good fit goal is similar to picking a good fit shoe.

We talked about purpose and interest as well. If I am going snowshoeing, I would pick the snow shoes, not the high heels! Each shoe has a purpose. We then related this to choosing good fit goals for kindergarten. We also discovered that a goal that I am working on might not fit with another student in my class. Mrs. Bowles tried to wear Mrs. Ly’s shoes and it did not fit her!

We have a new activity in gym! Ask me to tell you about what station I was at today.

Question of the day:  Post on the blog one thing you learned about choosing good fit goals from our good fit goals shoe lesson today!

Snow and eggs

Dear Mom and Dad:

Wow we are natural scientists at Ctanston School!

We have 65 new guests in our school! Ask me to tell you about the eggs and what kind of eggs they are. There were about two that have hatched already. We will be monitoring them closely to see if we observe any changes!

Ask me to tell you what happened to our containers of snow! We learned that water comes in 3 different forms. It can be a solid and a liquid as what we have observed. We are investigating what the 3rd property is!

Ask me to tell you what I observed and noticed today about the different containers.

AM: ask me to tell you what we did with Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Southworth.

PM: ask me to tell you about the letter a and what sound it makes!

Question of the day: what do you wonder about the trout eggs?

Winter Walk

Dear Mom and Dad:

A HUGE thank you to all of the parent volunteers today for helping us on our walk. We could not have done it without you!

What an exciting day we had today. Our winter walk was fantastic. Ask me to tell you what I was looking for today and some of the winter signs I saw.

We collected some snow and brought it back to the classroom. We learned that we use a thermometer to measure temperature. We learned that when things are cold, the red mercury goes down and when it’s warmer it goes up! We tested this by comparing the temperature when the thermometer was in our snow and when it was out.

We decided to put the containers of snow in 4 different areas.

1)   Classroom

2)   Outside

3)   Freezer

4)   Fridge

I wonder what will happen to the snow in these different areas!!

Question of the day:  I wonder what will happen to the snow?

Dear Mom and Dad of AM kindergarten:

We learned about a Cranston project that we do every year called “Tanga”. There is a school in Tanzania called Tanga and Cranston school has raised funds to be used to support the school 6 years now.  We looked at photos of the school and talked about the similarities and differences.

We had a special artist come in today to work with us. Her name is Mrs. Ellison. We will be working on a special art piece and on February 25, there will be a Tanga evening where you can purchase our art work for $10 each. More details to come! All of the money will be donated to the school Take a look at the photos!

Ask me to tell you about: bird's nests in the classroom, leaking roof, water, supplies

Our money helped give Tanga school a new roof as there's was leaking, new floors and a water well for them to get clean drinking water!

Question of the day: Post on the blog something you learned about Tanga School today.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As part of an ongoing commitment to improve the well-being of children in Canada, school authorities have been collecting data on kindergarten-age children. This year, all kindergarten classes in Alberta once again will be invited to participate. It is your choice whether your child is included.

The results will provide information on children’s development and will be used to assist government and communities to work collaboratively toward ensuring children have a strong start in life. Government and communities will be more informed about the status and progress of early childhood development.

What personal information is being collected?

Personal information including date of birth, gender, student number, postal code, and opinions and observations about your child will be collected. Registration information will be provided through the child’s student record. The teacher will not be actively questioning a child or asking a child to perform any tasks but will complete a questionnaire based on their observations.

The questionnaire is called the Early Development Instrument (EDI). The EDI was developed by the Offord Centre for Child Studies and covers five areas of child development: 1) physical health and well-being; 2) social knowledge and competence; 3) emotional health and maturity; 4) language and thinking skills; and 5) general knowledge and communication skills.

How will this information be used and disclosed?

Government of Alberta:
Aggregated and anonymized data will be used by Education, Health, and Human Services to make changes that will improve outcomes for children. The data will be used for the following purposes:
• To inform policy and program development and the allocation of resources
• To support priority setting related to early childhood development

• To support program and policy evaluation and measurement.

Alberta Education may match individual identifying EDI data with other data that is collected about student progress, for example Provincial Achievement Tests results. Individual results will not be tracked. Reported data will be grouped together and made anonymous so that an individual child cannot be recognized. The data will help Alberta Education to make policy and program decisions that will help to improve educational outcomes for all students.
Alberta Education will provide the individually identifiable EDI data to Alberta Health and it will be matched with the child’s diagnostic, treatment and care information, and registration data1. The matched data will then be used by Health for longitudinal analytics that will provide information on trends, and inform allocation of resources and policy development, evaluation and measurement.

Communities and Early Childhood Development (ECD) Community Coalitions:
Health will anonymize, aggregate and correlate matched data with census data so that population level reports can be created. These reports will be shared with Alberta communities and ECD Community Coalitions to inform decisions at the community level to improve outcomes for early childhood development. For example community leaders may choose to co locate services creating a one stop shop for early childhood related services, supports and information for families of young children; early literacy programs to include infants and toddlers may become available where there were none before; parks and playgrounds may become a reality where EDI data suggests that children need more opportunity for physical development.

School Authorities:
School and population level information about how kindergarten children are doing will help school authorities to plan and program for the needs of students as they enter the school system.

What is required for my child to participate?
We are asking for your consent for your child’s participation in the EDI and authorization for the indirect collection of your child’s personal information by signing the attached Parent Authorization Form.

Please complete and sign the form and return it to your child’s teacher by Monday, January 25th, 2016.

Who do I contact for more information?
If you have questions or concerns regarding the collection, uses, and disclosure of your child’s personal information by Alberta Education, contact:

Power of Ten

**We will be going to the learning commons to get new books tomorrow. Please have your child return their library books if they haven't already.

Dear Mom and Dad:

We read a story called “Zero”. Did you know that it is impossible to continue to count past 9 without the number 0? Ask me to tell you why!

We worked with “power of ten cards” today. These cards help me subitize! This big word that we have been learning means that I can recognize objects or dot arrangements at a glance without having to count. For example if you show me 7 fingers, I automatically know that one hand is 5. I can use the counting on strategy to figure out how many fingers. For example, 5,6,7.

I got familiar with the cards by ordering them from 1-10 and then I learned a new math game called “More than less than”. Ask me to tell you how to play this game. I can play this game using a deck of cards at home if we have some.

We had dance today with Mrs. Janelle!

Question of the day: Go to this website ----->  illuminations ten frame
Practice subitizing and post on the blog that you went to the website!

Terrific Tuesday!

Dear Mom and Dad of kindergarten:

AM CLASS:
The AM class focused on the letter “g” today. We learned that g is the loud sound of k. I can remember the sound g makes by pretending to drink grape juice and making the sound g-g-g-g-g. Ask me to show you what sound g makes. Ask me to print the upper case of G and lower case of g. We learned that it is a tricky letter. I can show you how I print a G. Please remind me to always start at the top!

PM CLASS:
We had guest teachers today. Ask me to tell you what we drew in our visual journals!

Question of the day: What center did you go to today?
